10 Great Cat Breeds For Kids

Got kids? Are they begging for a new kitty? Then drop whatever you’re doing and read this post! We’ve compiled a list of ten cat breeds that are great for children, as well as the reasons why. Here goes:

10. Birman
According to PetMd.com, this cat breed loves to love – both giving and receiving it. It’s also smart and very receptive to training. Animal Planet notes that you should consider a Birman for quieter or younger children, or those equipped with patience and who like cuddling.

9. Ragdoll
Catster calls this breed a gentle giant. Why is it called a “Ragdoll?” PetMd points out that when picked up, this cat will go limp like a ragdoll! “Soft voiced and gentle, the Ragdoll enjoys attention but will not demand it.”

8. Himalayan
More active than a Persian and quieter than a Siamese. PetMd notes that the Himalayan falls into that easy place where an evening game of laser tag or “mouse fishing” is a suitable activity level. This breed loves quiet, relaxing moments.

7. Maine Coon
These big mellow cats, says Catster, are naturally sociable and great with kids. Just note that they do need to be brushed daily.

6. Persian
Catster points out that like the Maine Coon, a Persian needs daily grooming, so be prepared for that commitment before adopting one. They are social and love attention.

5. Exotic Shorthair
PetMd describes this breed as “a Persian without the pretensions.” The Exotic Shorthair plays up the easy-going, laid back personality of the Persian, without aloofness and grooming demands.

4. Burmese
Catster says that this breed is friendly, people-oriented, and very gentle with kids. Also, a Burmese can rival a dog in its ability to retrieve tossed objects and fondness for daily games of fetch.

3. Abyssinians
Abyssinians are great for older and energetic children, according to Animal Planet. These cats like to be outside, and they’ll get your kids on the lawn as much as possible. Abyssinians are playful and considered the clowns of the feline world. However, these cats don’t make great starter pets for toddlers or younger children who aren’t old enough to play outside on their own.

Animal Planet points out that the Manx is known for being the cat without a tail, and it comes in both short- and longhaired varieties. Its tall hind legs let the Manx jump very high. This is an extremely playful breed, known for a high interaction level.

Because of the Tiffany’s balanced personality and ideal temperament, this breed is often described as a Goldilocks cat. It is active, yet tolerates quiet time. It is curious, yet won’t force itself aggressively into your business or get into mischief. It will also play companionably with children, but it won’t wear them out with excessive energy levels.
