There are many preconceived ideas about what Dobermans are like. Thanks to TV and movies, they are portrayed as vicious guard dogs, ready to tear apart any intruder. Even their origins as a dog breed, was to come up with a fearsome dog to protect a tax collector.

Dobermans are working dogs, bred for protection. Schutzhund trained Dobermans excel at obedience, tracking and protection, however, anyone who is familiar with or has owned a Doberman (or 2 or 3) knows there is much more to this awesome breed. Doberman owners know the breed as "Velcro" dogs because they always want to be as physically close as possible to their people. As a Doberman breeder and owner of 3 Dobermans, I can tell you that they try their hardest to be lap dogs. They absolutely love attention and affection. Not many dogs love to be hugged, but Dobermans do. They are very smart and easily trained, but they also do the dumbest things and can be quite comical. Yes, this noble and elegant breed can be downright silly.

Many people question whether a Doberman can be a good pet for families with children. If you bring a Doberman puppy into your home, and provide obedience training, and spend quality time with your pup, you will have a great family pet. The fact that Dobermans love attention, and affection and play, makes them a good choice for active families, and you can be sure no one will try to snatch your children from your yard!

Before I had Dobermans, I did not realize they have 2 different and distinct sides to their personalities. They love people and any friend of yours will be a friend of theirs, however, true to their breeding, your Doberman will protect his family with his life, and if you are uncomfortable with someone, or feel the least bit threatened, your dog will act accordingly. This does not mean he will attack, this means he will exhibit warning signs that will be obvious to anyone. It rarely needs to go beyond that as most people get the message from your Doberman quite clearly.

Dobermans are awesome dogs, but like any breed, they are not for everyone. I promise you, if you are willing to work with your puppy, to teach him his place and how to get along in your home, you will have a wonderful, loving, devoted and fun addition to your family.
