The actual construction can be quite simple or more extravagant depending on how much time, money and effort you want to put into your chickens new home.
In many cases you can find a good majority of the building materials in your local area for free. Sometimes you can find usable pieces in construction dumpsters if permitted to forge through them. With a little extra time and effort you may be able to also find such items as metal roofing pieces to utilize for roof completion. It's amazing how much you can really save on building a chicken coop if you really try. One chicken coop owner and builder that I am familiar with did just that. The only materials he mainly had to purchase were the floor joists and the two by fours used for the walls and roof truss. Most all else with few exceptions he scavenged from around the local neighborhood.
One basic but very important thing to remember is the necessary use for a level. Relying on your eye's perspective can really make a mess of your final constructed coop. Check and double check with your level and you'll be happy you did in the end. Also important is to insulate the walls of the chicken coop. The chickens will appreciate your efforts to keep them reasonably warm throughout the cooler times of the year. You may have extra insulation left over from your own homes construction to be able to utilize for the chicken coop project. Chickens also amazingly enough love to look out a window. If you can factor in some windows for their viewing you may just increase your egg production because of happy chicken tenants.
One important recommendation from many chicken coop builders is to plan and build the chicken coop big enough. Once you have it built and receive the daily rewards of fresh eggs and perhaps from time to time fresh chicken soup you will be hooked on raising chickens.
