Certain canine conditions can be eased somewhat by feeding your pet high fibre dog food. However, before you choose to take this drastic step and place your pet on a special high fibre diet, it is necessary that you ask the advice of your pet抯 vet as in some cases it can do more harm than good.

Fibre has a very important role to play in the body, but it can be very difficult for the digestive system to break down and while a certain amount of fibre is an essential part of a diet, too much fibre unnecessarily can cause further digestive problems. There are three cases that come to mind where a diet that is higher in fibre can be extremely beneficial.

Firstly, fibre can aid in the clearing up of constipation. While it does not cure it completely, an increased amount of fibre in the diet will definitely help your pet get over it faster and be able to do its business. Fibre is able to help with this as it stimulates the movement of the intestinal tract.

Secondly, fibre is beneficial if your pet suffers from diabetes. Because it is difficult for the digestive system to break down, and it therefore remains in the body for a while, it helps the body regulate how sugar is absorbed from the intestine. This means that if your pet suffers from diabetes, the increased fibre will help control the sugar levels in the blood.

Thirdly, fibre also helps in cases of canine obesity. High fibre food is more filling than food which is lower in fibre, which means that your dog will feel full after eating less food. Food that is higher in fibre is also generally lower in calories, thus your pet is eating less and consuming fewer calories. However, simply placing your pet on a high fibre diet is not enough on its own to cause your pet to lose weight. It is important that it gets plenty of exercise each day too.

One of the best, easiest and cheapest ways to provide your pet with a high fibre diet, and to monitor and control the amount of fibre that is being consumed is to make your pet抯 food yourself. There are literally hundreds of recipes for great tasting dog food available in books as well as on the internet. It is also a healthier alternative to commercially produced dog food as all the ingredients are fresh and are generally found in any kitchen.
