A polydactyl cat or American polydactyl cat is similar to any other domestic cat. It is one of the much-loved breeds found generally in Canada, United States of America and in Southern Britain. These cats are born with extra toes owing to genetic abnormality known as polydactyly. Because of the genetic mutation, the extra toe may appear on the front feet, sometimes on the hind feet or on all feet. American polydactyl cats are available in both long and short hair.

 

These cats are much like any other simple-looking domestic cats. American polydactyl cats have numerous nicknames such as Hemingway cat, mitten cats, cats with thumbs, conch cats, six-fingered cats, boxing cats, Cardi-cats, Ithacats, thumb cats, mitten-foot cats or snowshoe cats.

 

Origin

 

During the Colonial Period sailors kept these Polydactyl cats in their ships as a good luck symbol at sea. Due to this, it is assumed that these multiple-toe cats reached in the United States of America during the Colonial Period through ships. The American Polydactyl cats are bred exclusively for their attractive color, extra toes, their unique personality and size, and for their excellent health condition.

 

Breed Traits and Characteristics
