Using Healthy Dog Food Can Help Prolong Life

27 12:05:30
Healthy dog food used to be provided by nature. The act of hunting prey would keep dogs active. They would benefit from the moisture in the kill and the natural nutrients. Their teeth would be constantly cleaned and kept healthy from chewing on bones. Today, they live pretty cushy lives and depend on us.

The problem is that much of the packaged meals we provide our best friends may not necessarily be the best thing for them. Many will be lacking in needed nutrients. Some of the things seen as a result are dogs that develop chronic bad gums, teeth and breath, dry, lackluster coats, skin irritations, and a host of other concerns ranging from stomach upsets to diabetes and organ damage, including the kidneys, pancreas, heart and liver.

Of course, we are apt to cause problems for our pets by including table scraps and other human foods and treats. Here are a few things to avoid, even though it might be difficult to say no to those big, begging eyes. Start by eliminating fatty foods like gravies, bacon grease and candies. There are other foods that are toxic to animals and may have severe consequences when consumed, especially if in larger quantities.

That is not to say there are not some things we can share with our dogs that may be very good for their overall health. Some will argue the benefits of providing raw, homemade diets. First, always use common sense when handling raw meats. It is always best to freeze it first, then thaw in the fridge. Wash everything, your hands, the utensils, and the counter tops.

There are different camps regarding the feeding of raw foods to dogs. Some see more risks than benefits, however, it is an alternative to provide some variety for your pet a couple of times a week. Always remember to grind any bones though so there is not a risk of causing digestive obstructions and they get the needed calcium.

Speaking of different camps, probably the one regarding the dry versus canned is the most divisive. Understand, both are likely to have some level of added dyes, flavorings, or preservatives. These chemicals have been linked to many ailments and even some to certain cancers. It is almost necessary to have some preservative to prevent the contents from turning rancid. The dyes are mostly to make it more appealing to us. The artificial flavors to make it tastier for our pets.

If you are one that prefers the convenience of dry foods or kibble, look for those that list animal proteins as the main ingredient or is listed first. Try to find one with as few listed by-products as possible. Some are now using natural preservatives like Vitamin C or Vitamin E. These are also powerful antioxidants along with others like flavanoids. Whole grains are important and do your best to avoid getting dyes and other chemical additives.

Some are strong proponents that believe a healthy dog food would be that found in a can. One reason is the amount of moisture as opposed to dry or kibble. Another is the higher amount of proteins instead of carbohydrates. The third would be the fact that canned food is easier to digest. These three things can help prevent chronic dehydration, kidney and urinary tract problems, diabetes, obesity, and digestive problems.
