The budgie is also known as the Budgerigar or the Parakeet. This species can be found in south Australia, in the woods and grasslands. The medium average lifespan of the Budgie is between 5 and 9 years. There were cases of Budgies who lived to be teenagers. They are relatively small, getting to around 20cm (8 inches) in length, from the tail feathers to the beak.

These types of birds are well known for their joviality. They love to spend time with human companions and they are extremely jovial. They enjoy playing and exploring the environment and the surroundings and it can be a very good bird for a beginner, since they are independent. People who like to form a string connection with a Budgie should resist the desire to bring another bird into their homes because budgies are less enthusiastic about humans if they have other bird companions.

The Budgies that are in the wild have yellow and green stripes, that are dark green, with a black look. But some breeders have produced in captivity Budgies in just almost all colors of the rainbow and they constantly bring new colors.

Remember that you can't spot the female or male Budgie by the color of the feathers. When they become adults, the males will have a blue/purple color, while the females are brown or tan.

Most of the times, the budgies in the wild have a diet made entirely of seeds. But that is not all the time adequate for the birds in captivity. The veterinarians say that budgies should have a diet of pellets that are extruded, because those have nutrients and vitamins that are important and can be boosted with extra supplements. You should give the budgies both vegetables and fresh fruits (leafy greens, apples and grapes).

Because budgies are very active little birds, they need daily exercise. Not only to keep them in shape but also keep them happy, especially, the budgies that are held in captivity.

Budgies, especially those that live in cages that are small, should be let out for at least a few hours each day in an area that is secure. They will exercise flying and stretching their wings.

Many people know that budgies love humans. This is what makes them perfect as pets and many bird lovers have had at least one budgie. They were first bred in captivity, in the 1800's and till now they remain quite common and popular as pets.

Despite their small size, the budgies have a big hart and a huge personality. They enjoy talking and whistling and they are extremely intelligent. With the right socialization and training, these birds can become a great addition for a family.

They have a small size and this makes them perfect to be taken care of and they are a wonderful option for children or for persons who can't take care of larger birds. Other reasons why they are great as pets are: easy to feed and clean after, not expensive and easy to keep in the apartment.
