Adopting A Pet From An Animal Rescue

Over nine million pets are euthanized every year. Most of these pets were sweet, loving, and healthy animals that were just hoping for a good home. rescue pets have many advantages over breeder and pet store animals. With rescue pets you do not have to be wary that you are inadvertently supporting a horrible 'puppy mill', you know they have a clean bill of health, and you know they have been kept up to date on their vaccinations.

The wonderful thing about adopting rescue pets is most have already been trained. By adopting an older dog you don't have to worry about housebreaking them, teaching them basic commands, and leash training. Cats will usually already be litter trained and well socialized. With a rescue pet, what you see is what you get in many cases. The animals are usually full grown and have fully developed their personality and temperament.

Puppies are a lot of work. An older dog is more laid back and often less demanding. If chewing is a concern, older dogs usually do not chew as much as teething puppies. Unlike puppies, older dogs do not require as much active quality time and are perfect if you have a busy lifestyle. They are independent and content with casual walks and sleeping at your feet. If you have children, a dog that is only even a couple of years old can show more patience and be a great companion for your kids.

If a dog seems like to much work, a cat may be a better choice for a pet. Litters of kittens are dropped of at shelters every day because people refrain from spaying and neutering their cats. These kittens need a good home. If you already own a cat, a kitten can be a good choice since most adult cats are not threatened by a new kitten in their home like they might be with an older cat.

Yet, older cats need a home and companionship too. Like dogs, with older cats their temperament is already known. Whether or not they get along with other cats, dogs, or children is usually not a mystery. Older cats are particularly suited to the elderly, offering low maintenance companionship and love.

One of the most important benefits of a rescue pet will be their devotion to you and your family. Somehow, animals seem to know how lucky they are to have found a new home. They will show this devotion with unwavering loyalty, love, and companionship. You can be a hero to a special cat or dog because when you adopt a pet from a shelter you will not only be getting a new best friend, you will be saving a life.
