Cuddly pets for kidshave been around for centuries now, in some form or another. The very first teddy bear however was not created, it is rumoured anyway, until, in about 1903, a toy store owner in Brooklyn, NY decided to call the soft, stuffed bears that his wife handmade teddy bears after the then president Theodore Roosevelt. He did write to the president before doing so and the story says that the president said yes.

Cuddly pets for kidsare more than just teddy bears though. Stuffed creatures of all kinds appeal to us all, not just to kids. One of the most diverse lines of these kinds of toys -Beanie Babies- is about to turn twenty years old this year and yet these unique little creatures are still as popular as they ever were.

The Beginning of theBeanie Babies

The first Beanie Babies appeared in August of 1993, the creation of the Ty Company in America. The initial launch only consisted of nine different animals. These were Legs the Frog, Squealer the Pig, Spot the Dog, Flash the Dolphin, Splash the Whale, Chocolate the Moose, Patti the Platypus, Brownie the Bear (who was later renamed "Cubbie"), and Pinchers the Lobster. The initial 'run' of Beanie babies lasted until 1999. They did not stay away for very long though as a new line was launched in 2000. The Beanies went online in 2006, with their own Internet based world and Ty also began producing licensed Beanie Babies that feature characters from TV shows like Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants.

Beanie Boos are baby animals with big huge eyes while Beanie Ballz are just what they sound like - ball shaped creatures that bounce! There is even a full range of Pokemon Beanie Babies that feature some of the most popular creatures from that universe.

The Most Famous Beanie Babies

Although in twenty years hundreds of differentcuddly pets for kidshave been released by Ty under the Beanie label there are a couple, from the original run in the 1990s that are considered 'the most famous' of them all.

One is Garcia the Bear. He is a tie dye rainbow coloured bear who was released, but then retired far more quickly than other beanies, in 1996. The problem was that he was named after the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia who had recently passed away. However Jerry Garcia's surviving family objected to the use of the name and Garcia was withdrawn. He came back in 2000, but this time his name was Peace.

Probably the most famousBeanie Babyof all though was Princess the Bear. Princess the Bear was named after the late Princess Diana and all the proceeds from the sale of the deep purple bear went to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
