Understanding Pug Dog Breed

Pugs are cute, fun and entertaining to watch. These little fur balls love to clown around for their human companions. With a flat wrinkly black face and beautiful fawn or black coats people fall in love with them immediately. This is breeds that although their expression looks stern actually are very sensitive especially to the tone of the human voice.

Pugs have been called by many names such as Carlin, Mops, Mini Mastiff and Dutch Bulldog, however the breed was started many years ago in China. The size, shape and even coloring of the pug has changed over time until today where the standard coats accepted by the American Kennel Club are black or fawn. Some breeders have begun crossing the pug with Chihuahuas and even Beagles creating designer breeds such as the mini pug and the puggle.

Temperament

Pugs are a perfect breed if you have a lot of time and attention to give them. They live to please and are actually known as the clown of the dog world. Your pug will enjoy your company and as mentioned above are sensitive to the sound and tone of the human voice. This means that training time will be better without harsh words or punishment.

Be prepared to have a constant companion when you have a pug puppy or puglet in your home. They like to have your full attention and will often follow your every move when you are walking around the house. This animal can be quite stubborn at times as well, so be prepared to work harder with them on sit and stay!

Training

If the pug has a character flaw it is their stubborn streak. This dog is not a golden retriever by any means and it will take patience and consistency to assert your authority with this particular breed. The best way to overcome a lot of this is to begin training at a very young age, you can use puppy training at home to nip these behaviors in the bud.

A well trained dog is a joy to have around but a belligerent one, not so much! Whether you have had your pug for years or are just considering the idea you will want to consider training your pug at home. Soft calm tones are mandatory as is a firm tone; your pug must be constantly reminded who is the boss!

Potty Training

Being in firm control of your pug will come in quite handy when it is time to start potty training. This is yet another area where their stubbornness leads to issues. The standard dog will be potty trained within a month or month and a half expect to spend at least double that amount of time training your pug puppy!

Tricks

When you spend time training your pug at home you increase the bond between you, so not only will you have a well behaved dog but a loyal one as well. Besides training for obedience you can also teach your pug fun tricks. They naturally clown around but with a little training you can have them dancing or even jumping through hoops!

Exercise

You may think the only reasons to train your pug are for obedience or fun, but did you know that teaching your dog to roll over and jump is great exercise? Small dog breeds such as the pug and beagle are prone to becoming overweight and as an owner you should commit to daily exercise whether it be training, walking or a combination of the two. Pug training can easily be done from home saving you hundreds of dollars you would pay at professional trainers.

When you have the proper information training your pug at home is fun and easy. Besides there is nothing your pug puppy would rather do than spend time with you whether it is to romp in the grass or learning to sit, they love to be with you.
