Bird Houses for Wrens

Wrens are chubby little birds with bills that are slender and slightly curved. They are found throughout North America. You can find them flittering around in your yard with their short tails erect. They are wonderful birds to attract into your yard even though they have a loud, bubbly, irritable song. However, they eat nasty vermins like spiders, grasshoppers, snails, caterpillars and others. Wrens make homes in the oddest of places梛ars, cans, paper bags, shoes, car radiators, mailboxes梐nything is fair game.


The wrens have very strange nesting habits. Usually, the male will come out in early spring and construct as many as a dozen nests in his territory. When the females arrive, he takes a female around to show her his work. When the female finds a home she likes, they will mate. And then, the female will tear apart the house that her mate made and start all over again.


The female will lay five to seven oblong eggs which will incubate for about two weeks. After that, the young will take off in another two weeks.


Wrens will not be attracted by bird feeders as they are, predominantly, insect eaters. But, what will attract them is a hanging bird bath or a pedestal filled with water. They, also, like bird houses built from feathers, twigs, leaves and grass. If you offer them a supply of nesting materials, they will be more than happy to build themselves a home in your yard and keep all the insects away for you.
