6 Tips To Setting Up Your Hermits Crabs Home

If you are into owning exotic pets, hermit crabs are one of the cheapest pet that you can have. While it is a common perception that hermit crabs are throwaway pets that could only survive for a few days, this way of thinking is not always true. The key to raising a hermit crab successfully is to set-up the hermit crab habitat appropriately. Success depends on how you manipulate the conditions in your pet抯 place where it lives in. With the appropriate habitat that is so much alike with their natural habitat, a hermit crab can actually survive up to 32 years!

Here are some tips on how to set up an appropriate hermit crab habitat for your pets:

1. Wherever you are going to maintain your hermit crab habitat, make sure to lay out the reptile heating sheet and plug it in place with the aquarium on top of it. The dimensions of the heating pad should only be half the size of the tank so to allow the crab to have its choice of temperature.

2. Place in your moistened substrate into the tank. The preferred choice of substrate is imitation sand that should be 4 to 5 inches deep.

3. In the sand, dig our 4 bowl sized spaces, 3 of which spaces are left empty wile the other one should be kept bigger. This is the place where the crabs may swim. In the bigger bowl, place in a sliced sponge to act as a ramp. Add salt water into the water and make sure to allow the crab to get out of the water easily.

4. On the second bowl, add in salt water. This will serve as the place for drinking. To the third bowl add fresh bowl and the final empty bowl will be the place for feeding.

5. In setting up a good hermit crab habitat, you can also add on some other objects that will enable your pet to hide in the aquarium. These objects may be artificial rocks. For aesthetic purposes, you can also buy artificial caves and the likes, But if you don抰 worry too much on the physical appearance of the habitat. You may also use other recyclable materials such as plastic box or plastic containers. To increase the humidity in the hermit crabs habitat, place in moistened natural moss in the hiding areas. Do not forget to leave sufficient space so that the hermit crabs will have a big exercise area.

6. Place in additional shells into your pet抯 house. This will make it readily available for the hermit crab to change their homes whenever they are ready. Place in your hermit crab pet in the aquarium and you are now ready to go.
