Goats are raised by many people for several reasons. The three main things a person gets on rearing goats are to get milk, meat and fiber. It is a very lucrative business carried out at several places. A small group of people enjoy keeping goats as pets and also enjoy going on hikes carrying their belongings on goat backs. But goats cannot be kept alone in houses. They need other goats in the herd in an open area.

Goat Fence and goat behaviour

Goat fence is an important part of goat rearing. It is difficult to choose the right type of fence .This aspect is quite confusing and turns out to be very frustrating. Actually it is a difficult job to keep the goats in a closed place. A secure Gedehegn made in the beginning will save time and money. There are several types of goat fences which include chain wire, barbed wire or electric fencing, but not a single one is full proof and safe for the goats. Each type has its own problem .for example the goats get their head or horns stuck in the fence if the wire gaps are wide, the electric fences tend to give a warning several times with the goats banging on them.

Fence need to be made after understanding the behaviour of the goats. Rearing goats in small groups or in large number will depend on the reason for keeping goats. Goats require a wide open area to move around. Goats by nature are found to intelligent and inquisitive animals. They keep hitting and testing the walls or enclosures around them. They look for holes and gaps in the Gedehegn to move out. They try to climb on rocks, wood logs or stump them while playing. The enclosure must be free from any just objects that would enable the goat to climb up and move out of the fence.

Gedehegn need to be tested occasionally for any damage which must be repaired immediately. Special attention must be given to gaps between the ground and the bottom wire. The first and second wire from the ground must be placed close to each other. Holes or gullies in the ground need to be regularly filled up. The tension in the wires must be tight enough to prevent the goats from going under them.

Gedehegn should be made with double end assemblies instead of angled assemblies. The usual angled assemblies at the ends enable the kids to jump on them and then jump out of the fence.double end assemblies are free from angled stays.
