Most people in the equestrian trade are decent and trustworthy people who are honest and should provide you with detailed information about the animal that they are trying to sell. However, as you would expect, there are also those who can not be trusted, and whose only interest is in making a quick sale. For this reason it is important that you take certain steps when looking for a horse to ensure that you don't get taken for a ride!!

Make sure you follow these important steps -

1) Do not purchase a horse before you have physically seen it. This is a recipe for disaster. It may look great in the advertisement or sound fantastic over the telephone but there are far too many things you don't know until you have looked at the horse in the stable and seen it under saddle.



2) Take someone with you who knows what they are talking about. They can advise you on the signs of potential stable vices, issues with the animals temperament and on possible injuries or conditions. They will also be in a position to identify the dodgy dealers described previously.



3) Before buying the horse ensure you have it examined by a qualified vet, and makes check into its identity. Have it scanned for a microchip. If possible have an equine dentist check its teeth to confirm what age it is. It is quite common for sellers to describe their horse as significantly younger than it actually is.



Remember that there are an awful lot of horses for sale out there and there is no rush. If you find an issue with your horse a short time after you get it home you can return it to the seller as not as described.
