With so many new cat, dog, and aquarium websites popping up every day it is increasingly difficult to compete online. If you plan on breaking into the online pet industry you need to be more creative and control every aspect of the operation. You need to make the right decisions from the start or your website will be a waste of time.

#1. Sell real products. Most of the cat, dog and aquarium websites don't even carry an inventory. They're just selling to the consumer and having the manufacturer ship direct. Don't do this. Yes you can make some money reselling somebody else's products but it's never going to be lucrative. You need to sell your own products direct to the customers and keep 100% of the profit.

#2. Don't let other people sell your products on their site. It can be tempting to let somebody else market your pet products. At first they would get sales that you can't get on your own however with some work you can drive traffic to your own website. You don't want to have other sites competing against you with your products. It is also annoying to have different sites pulling you in different directions.

#3 Forget the stores. Although selling your cat, dog or aquarium products in stores sounds good. You won't be able to get your costs low enough to compete against the major manufacturers unless you have a huge manufacturing operation. Your profits will be weak and both you and your distributors will be disappointed.

The best route is to have total control over every aspect. Make the products yourself, market them online through your website and don't bother with a retail store. Follow this and your overhead will always be low because you can run this type of business from a two car garage or workshop.
