Discus Fish is the most important fish which one wants to keep as pets in their aquariums. The beauty of Discus is compensated with good price. They are most moody creatures, and need close attention to be healthy. Please find the list of some important tips for keeping them healthy:
1) The most important question is how many discus one should keep in an aquarium. One should keep one discus fish per every 10 gallons of water one's tank can withhold. This fish needs space to roam about, and this will save from overcrowding the fish.

2) Discus Fish prefer tall-sized tank. They need to be kept in deep tanks because of their size. The tank should not be smaller than 35 gallon tank, as anything smaller than this will make it difficult to maintain the water.

3) Discus can be kept in empty tanks, however it would be better if one can add plants or bog wood to the tank. This would actually give them space to hide when they are frightened, and in bare tanks they might hurt themselves from dashing around in the tank.

4) Discus Fish do not like a sudden change in their food habits, so it is important to ask the breeder or the fish keeper the type of food with which they were feeding these fish. They can be fed most aquarium food like frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. Adult discus fish must be fed once a day and young discus fish should be fed three times a day. And if one desires to feed them with new food, it is important to start it in small doses. This will keep them free from stress.

5) Now, the most important thing to be taken care of is water quality, which must be clean and is changed whenever it is needed. Keeping Water Chemistry is very important which means water temperature between 82 and 86 degrees F, soft water between 3 and 15dH. The PH level needs to be between 5 and 6.5. This PH factor is really important as fish will not compromise. Any change will make them stressed and will lessen their life span. The water should be free of chlorine and heavy metals. One wants to invest in water purifying unit to keep the tank water clean. It must be ensured that aquarium water is slow moving and filtered.

6) If one wants to add other fish with discus fish, then one can add catfish, plecs or small tetras from South America(neon tetras), just making it sure that discus fish is largest fish in the tank.
