What You Should Know About Chi Dane Dane Crosses

A Great Dane Chihuahua mix is also called a Chi Dane or a Great Mexican, and is an extremely rare breed of dog. A Great Mexican is what we call a crossbreed or a designer dog, which means that it is a cross between two different purebred dogs.

What is a Great Mexican?

This is a cross between a Great Dane and a Chihuahua and is exceptionally rare. These crossbreeds can only be bred from a male Chihuahua and a female Great Dane, since the puppies are too large for a Chihuahua to birth. Most Chi Dane Danes are the result of two other cross breed dogs breeding, but there are only a handful of the designer breed of dogs in the world at the moment.

What Should I Know About Designer Dogs?

Designer dogs can be difficult to predict. A purebred dog will grow to a certain size and have a certain kind of temperament due to strict breeding standards, but crossbreed dogs inherit different traits from each parent and therefore can vary greatly, even within the same litter. How Big Will My Puppy Grow?

Obviously, there is a very big size difference between a Great Dane and a Chihuahua. Great Danes usually grow to between 28 and 34 inches and will weigh between 100 and 200 pounds. Chihuahuas are extremely small, and generally grow to only around 6 to 9 inches and will weigh between 2 and 6 pounds.

A Chi Dane Dane can be anywhere between these two huge extremes. In general, we would expect that a Great Dane Chihuahua mix would be much smaller than a Great Dane normally is, whilst being much larger than a Chihuahua generally grows.

What Will My Dog's Coat Be Like?

The female parent tends to be very short haired, with smooth, flat coats. Chihuahuas are usually also short haired with smooth, shiny coats, though there are some longer haired varieties. You can expect your pet to be a short haired dog.

Does this Designer Breed Have Any Coat Concerns?

Fortunately, Great Dane Chihuahua mixes are very low maintenance dogs. They won't need haircuts or styling, and will require only occasional brushing or shampooing in the bath. Given their short coats Chi Dane Danes may suffer in cold weather, so you might need to buy your dog a sweater or coat if you live in a cold climate.

What Will My Pet's Personality Be Like?

Great Danes are extremely patient and friendly animals, they're affectionate and loyal, get along great with children and make good watchdogs as well. Chihuahuas are also very loving animals, they're lively and curious, but can be stubborn if not properly trained. A Great Mexican will be a combination of all these characteristics.

How Much Exercise Does this Designer Breed Need?

How much exercise your cross breed dog will need will depend on how large your dog grows, but they're likely to need a fair amount of exercise with at least one long walk a day. This kind of dog is unlikely to be happy in an apartment.

Do Dogs With these Parents Have Any Health Problems?

Great Danes do tend to suffer from heart and hip issues, and due to their large size they are not a long lived breed of dog. They're also quite susceptible to cancer. Chihuahuas generally are prone to rheumatism, colds, and eye problems. As a crossbreed though a Chi Dane Dane will be healthier and more robust than a purebred animal.

How Do I Know if this Is the Right Pet for Me?

These dogs are very unusual and therefore quite expensive, though they would likely make a good family pet. If you're interested in getting a Great Mexican your best bet is to try to find a breeder who will answer all your questions and maybe even let you visit. There is not a lot of information about this breed available at the moment, since it's so new and rare.
