Homeopathy - Complimentary Therapies For Cats, Dogs, And Horses

Homeopathy has many uses for animals. Homeopathic remedies can treat first aid and acute symptoms in horses, dogs, and cats. But true homeopathic treatment takes the animals temperament and whole body into consideration. ie take my daughters lovely, quiet, gentle, unnervingly stubborn horse! That horse need a good dose or two of a remedy which has stubbornness as one of its chief signs. When choosing a remedy for an ailment he has, I will take the temperament involved into consideration when choosing a remedy for an injury or illness. Sometimes a horse will have a temperament like their owner - my son had a horse and they both did well on the same remedy! Both extroverted, strong willed, and a bit vain, although both very interesting and lovable characters.

There are many homeopathic remedies that are used as First Aid treatments. There are remedies for injuries such as sprained muscles, bites and stings. There are remedies for upset stomachs, from eating too much or the wrong things. First Aid remedies are very useful for situations such as over excitement at shows, or fear of entering a float. Riders can benefit from remedies to help them overcome their competition nerves. And of course, for injuries after falls.

Dogs and cats can be treated for worms and fleas. Cats can be the pits to treat with normal paste and pills. My daughter's cat has the ability to spit a pill 3 feet into the air whilst being held by 2 people - that cat has skills let me tell you!

There are animals who are allergic to things such as flea bites, or grass seeds, causing their fur or hair to fall out and sores from them biting themselves or scratching the areas on fences. For these animals a course of treatment to help desensitise them to the allergen is another option. It can be helpful in these cases if the animal is tested for their allergy so you can pinpoint the type of grass that is causing the reaction.

Sometimes people ask for a remedy to give their horse or dog a shiny coat. Homeopathy is not a therapy that can be used in this way. You can use a shampoo to make a shiny coat. You can use food additives in the horses diet to induce a shiny coat. What a homeopath would look at though is whether the horse has a dull coat because they are not assimilating the food properly in their gut. They are not making good use of the nutrients that are available. Then you would look at the rest of the horse - is it in good condition? Or has it lost a lot of weight? Is this weight loss from old age, and the inability to absorb their food properly? Or have they been neglected and suffered from not enough food or inappropriate food?

Then you would look at the temperament of the animal, and how they are coping - ie are they timid, distrustful, wary, fearful, angry? So several horses who have been treated the same but show different personality traits would be treated with different remedies. This is what makes choosing the correct remedy a job for a professional. Many first aid remedies can be used in acute situations, and work very well. But when there are chronic problems and complex issues it is best to work with all the professionals needed. Farriers, Vets, Chiropractors and Trainers can all work well with Homeopaths as each person uses their skills and complements each others skills and therapies.
