Children And Dogs

Before introducing a K9 friend into your family environment, there are many aspects to be considered before deciding on the breed that would be most compatible with you and your family.
When there are children present or your family is expecting, this aspect must be considered to ensure a healthy and safe environment for all members of your family.
After doing a bit of research, I have come to the conclusion that many people have different opinions regarding which breeds are the friendliest for children. However among the many articles that I read, the following breeds kept coming up as children friendly: Golden & Labrador Retrievers, Collies, Boxers, Miniature Schnauzers and Yorkshire Terriers.
Because of the fact that older dogs are much calmer than puppies, most experts recommend adult dogs for families with small children. A shelter might be a good place to look; not only will you be saving a life but it will also save you money! It is also a good idea to learn as much as possible about the dog's history before making a final decision.
Regardless of the age and breed of dog you will decide on, training is highly recommended, especially with small children around. As soon as you get your dog, invest in a Dog ID tag . Trust me, this will save you a lot of headaches because dogs tend to escape.
For you new owners, keep in mind the top reasons why dogs escape:
1- They are bored
Dogs need to get out there! They need some physical and mental stimulation. If you keep your pet closed up all day, there is a higher probability that they will want to pull a Houdini on you. Obviously some breeds need more exercise than others so when you consider a pet, consider one which will suit your lifestyle. Always keep in mind though that whatever breed you choose, regular physical and mental activity is important.
2- They miss you
If you isolate your dog for long periods of time, they are more likely to escape to find you or find another dog companion. Take your dog out regularly. Play with it and let it play with other dogs.
3- They are territorial
If your dog perceives a risk, he will try to escape in order to chase intruders off their territory. If you don't want your dog to overreact to outsiders, avoid isolating him. If your dog sees the mailman or the neighbour's cat regularly, he is less likely to freak out and try to escape to chase them.
4- Because that's what dogs do!
Dogs are predators and their instinct is to find prey. That's why they want to chase cats and squirrels. They also have the instinct to breed. So take the proper prevention measures so that it is difficult for your dog to escape.
You can take several measures to reduce the risks of escape but the bottom line is that dogs are likely to escape when they get the chance. This is why investing in a Pet ID tag is a no brainer. Make sure that your new furry family member will always be able to find his way back to his new home and family!
