The Story Behind Animal Communication

Following is an interview with Arlene Thompson, an animal communicator. Thanks Arlene, for talking to us!

What is animal communication?

Animal communication is the ability to communicate telepathically with animals. Telepathy is an exchange of energy between two beings conveyed through thoughts, feelings, images, smells, tastes and sounds. As an animal communicator, I am trained to interpret these sensations and derive a sensible message from them.

How did you find you had this ability?

Animals have always been a very important in my life. From an early age I shared a special bond with animals. I've had the ability to communicate with animals, but as I got older, I decided that communicating verbally was more acceptable and tried to stop communicating telepathically. Sadly, I was told too many times that I was imagining things.

My telepathic ability never quite went away completely, and later, I realized how very important it was to be able to communicate with my animal companions. I had to work long and hard to become proficient in doing so again. I read, took animal communication classes and workshops, had long discussions with other communicators, and most of all I practiced, practiced, practiced! Practice and belief in yourself are two of the most important elements in becoming a successful communicator. A very important lesson I learned early in my practice was that it is very important not to discount or ignore information received even if it seems silly or insignificant to you- it may have a world of significance to your client.

How do the animals involved convey their messages to you?

Messages are conveyed to me in a deluge of the five senses. Sometimes the information is literal and sometimes it comes in the form of symbols. It is then up to me to translate them into some semblance of order.

For instance, I often receive physical sensations from the animal that manifest themselves in my own body, not as intense as their pain, but enough to let me know where they are experiencing discomfort.

Sometimes the images I receive are literal and sometimes they come in the forms of symbols, like the image I received of a cat with a crown on her head whose nickname was Queenie.

I've smelled flowers or tasted apples (as in a message from a horse who wanted more time out in the pasture with the flowers and wanted yellow apples instead of green ones).

The most intense sensations that I receive have to do with emotions. I am flooded with feelings of joy, sadness, loneliness, fear, etc. Even when the animals can't put their feelings into words, I am able to sense their emotional state of mind.

What problems have dog owners approached you with that have been helped or solved with your ability to communicate with their pets?

Some of the problems I have encountered in sessions have dealt with undesirable behavior, physical problems, emotional problems, lost animals, assisting with transitions and putting clients in touch with animals that have crossed.

One example of behavioral and emotional problems would be my conversation with Duke. I was contacted by a family who adopted Duke from an animal shelter. Duke was happy and playful at the shelter, but very tense, unhappy and totally aloof with humans once he was in his new home. My client was confused and wondered why he was acting that way, and asked if I could communicate with him and see what was wrong and to find out how she could help.

Duke and I had an interesting conversation. He was a very sensitive soul and wanted desperately to please his new family. He was so afraid of rejection and failure that he was afraid to do anything for fear that it would be wrong and he would be sent away again. He did not trust people because they had betrayed him. He hid his pain and fear by acting aloof.

I talked with Duke about his new family and how much they loved him and that this would be his forever home, regardless! I told him that whatever had happened in the past was over and that there was no reason why now, he couldn't be happy, love and be loved. I could feel his relief, but wasn't sure he understood or accepted what I had said.

The next day, I got an excited email from my client thanking me profusely and telling me that her brother had come over to visit and instead of ignoring him, Duke walked right over to him and wanted to be petted! Her words were, "I don't know what you said to him, but it worked! He's a different dog!"

Another example of behavioral and emotional problem solving would be my session with Freddie. His family contacted me because their dog, Freddie, was terrified of car rides and would shake, vomit and become hysterical whenever he had to go in the car. His family was quite upset and frustrated about this and wanted to find out why this happened and what could be done to help.

Freddie told me that when he was in the car he felt as if he had been captured by a beast that took him places against his will. He felt completely out of control! I explained that his beloved family, whom he trusted completely, was in control of the car and that it would only take him where they told it to go. Freddie looked skeptical but listened.

I received an email a few weeks later telling me that Freddie had overcome his fear of riding in a car and indeed, begged to go for rides now! His family was thrilled!

What are the most common things dog owners want to know about their pets?

The questions I am asked most are: Are my animals happy? Are they sick or in pain? Is it time for them to cross? Do they want or need help in doing so?

Do you ever find animals that are unwilling to "talk"?

I have only had a few animals that were completely unwilling to talk with me at all, but most eventually do. If this happens, I wait and contact them another time. I never force the issue. Sometimes I enlist the help of other animals in the household to convince them to talk with me. Most are willing and eager to talk to someone who understands them.

What do you say to skeptics? I believe that skepticism is a healthy thing. The concept of communication with animals is difficult for most people to grasp. It was even difficult for me to grasp when I began to do this, but after so many times of getting things right, I couldn't help but believe in it. I don't require that they believe in what I can do, only that they keep an open mind about it. In fact, some of my former skeptics have become some of my biggest advocates.

Are you able to communicate with your own animals as well as other peoples?pets?

I communicate with my animals on a daily basis, but much more informally than I would with clients. Communicating with your own animals is a completely different thing than with others?animal companions. Because of the emotional attachment, it is very difficult to be objective, and therefore, you find yourself second-guessing what you receive. It is, however, very comforting to be able to convey messages to them especially in stressful times when they are sick or dying.
