Giving Puppies As Gifts

With the holidays right around the corner the temptation to give the gift of a furry friend to a loved one may be running at an all time high. While that adorable puppy may make quite a reaction under the tree on Christmas morning, dogs should only be given as gifts to those ready for the responsibility. The decision to become a caretaker of a pet is a huge one and shouldn’t be sprung upon someone, even with the best of holiday intentions.

With that being said, if you know someone who has been hinting that they have a “rover” on their want list this year, here are some ways you can provide them with helpful and responsible gifts for the holiday and still encourage their dog crazy ways!

  • Find out what breeds they are interested in and pick up a few books on them. There are titles written about almost every breed known to man! You should be able to find the one they are looking for.
  • Assemble a puppy care kit that contains all of the items they *will* need for their pooches first few weeks at home and place all of them inside a crate. You can stuff the crate with puppy safe toys, bowls, a leash and collar, healthy treats and don’t forget the stain remover! You can even go as far as to pay for obedience classes and first puppy check ups in advance! These are amazing gifts and will be valued by any new dog owner!
  • Make a homemade gift certificate for the adoption fee of a dog from the local shelter and then make a date where you can go together to look around for a dog. That way your loved one gets to choose the right companion for them and you are still getting them the pet that they have been wanting. Plus you are saving a life! It’s a win/win situation all around!
  • With all the chaos of the Christmas season, it’s also wise to wait until the excitement has died down a bit before bringing a new family member into the house. So in the meantime, read up and enjoy the anticipation of the holiday season!
