Pit bulls are a very intriguing dog species. Besides their small size, they are wide and broad built and are known to have one of the strongest of bites among all dog species. Pit bulls are anyways the center of controversy thanks to much unscrupulous breeding and a few other factors that are majorly myths. Some of these myths are discussed below:

1. More biting power and locking jaws

The jaws of pit bulls function in the same manner as those of other dogs, while there is no such thing as a locking mechanism in any dog. In addition, the pit bulls' biting pressure isn't any greater either. Dr. Brady Barr from the National Geographic TV actually studied the force with which dogs bit. He compared the forces of a Rottweiler, German shepherd and a pit bull. He came to know that the Rottweiler bit the hardest with a force of 328 pounds, while the force exerted by a German shepherd was 238 pounds and the pit bull, finally, was the lowest of the group with a force of 325 pounds.

2. Pit bulls are more aggressive as compared with other dogs

No particular breed of dogs is aggressive and aggression in them instead, depends upon dog to dog. It is more dependent upon the environment of the animal. According to a 2008 study conducted in the University of Pennsylvania, the most aggressive from among 30 dog breeds were Chihuahuas and Dachshunds. They were aggressive towards both, humans and dogs.

3. Pit bull bites are more dangerous

The US Centers for Disease prevention and control reports 4.5 million dog bites each year. However, of this number, only twenty to thirty bites are fatal. The 2009 report records that the pit bulls are participants in the most fatal bites, but the American Veterinarian Medical Association's came up with a different result in December in the same year. It said that over twenty different breeds were equally responsible for the most number of attacks in 2009.

4. Pit bulls cannot be trained

Dogs are some of the most intelligent domestic animals. Hence, alike humans, they also require mental stimulation and they like being trained. Pit bulls are no exception and they possess excellence in a number of areas including agility and tracking.

Similarly, pit bulls alike all other dog species would have exceptions too.
