At this time the vet can also perform an ultrasound to estimate how many puppies the dog will have, though this will only be an estimate until later in the pregnancy when X-rays may be taken. The average pregnancy lasts for approximately 63 days, so taking note of the time between breeding and the appearance of symptoms will help determine if the dog is pregnant.

Look for a change in the dog's mood, such as an increase in affection and demand for attention. Enlarged nipples and an increase in appetite may occur in the first few weeks.
