There are many factors that can contribute to problematic conditions seen in canines' eyes. Below is a listing of some common complaints suffered by dogs and their owners. The most common treated and viewed conditions and diseases out of many are these: Cataracts, Cherry Eye, Corneal Ulcers, Detached Retina, Distichiasis, Entropion, Eye Removal Surgery, Eye Prosthetic, Glaucoma, Goniodysgenesis, Herpes, Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, Pannus, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Retinal Degeneration and Uveitis.

Cataracts make vision impaired for your dog through a lens in the eye becoming cloudy. Causes include diabetes, eye trauma or inflammation and the treatment involves surgery to remove the clouded lens in the eye or eyes. Cherry eye happens when the tear gland of the dog's third eyelid becomes dislodged from it's usual position. Causes are many and only surgery can fix the tear gland positioning. Corneal ulcers are wounds or scratches to the surface of the eye. Causes can be several, from small particles to an injury. Treatment depends on the serious nature of the condition, from healing on its own to ointments to even surgery if the problem is deep.

Distichiasis causes irritation and corneal ulcers through the misalignment in eyelashes due to abnormal growth of glands. Trimming or the removal of the eyelashes is the treatment. While this may work for a while new growth may sprout and cause more problems. Nothing is needed to be done if there are no adverse effects to your dog. Entropion happens when the dog's eyelid folds under itself. A genetic condition found in young dogs and occasional problem with older dogs with weak muscles is usually the cause. A surgical procedure fixes the condition. Glaucoma can cause a loss of vision if the fluid in the eye builds pressure and erodes the retina. First treatments may include ointments and medications. If these methods do not prove to be effective, surgery by a veterinary ophthalmologist may be needed to correct the condition. If left untreated, this painful can create other serious conditions in your dog.

Glaucoma can be a cause for retinal degeneration in a dog. There is progressive retinal atrophy and there is retinal degeneration. Both conditions may cause blindness in your dog from either the result of other diseases or it is inherited. Retinal degeneration happens suddenly or over time while retinal atrophy is the process of how the eye is able to process light, resulting first in a hard time to see at light and then after some time total blindness. In either condition there is no known cure or treatment for the diseases. Keratoconjunctivitis is also a common ailment for dogs. Caused by bacteria entering the eye treatment for conjunctivitis is usually done with antibiotic ointments.

These are the most common conditions seen and treated by veterinarians, but by far are not the only ones. A general hygienic routine can prevent some eye conditions from developing while others are much more severe and some with no available treatment. Caring for your dog through veterinarian check-ups, cleanliness and safety measures can help to avoid some ailments. Others are unfortunately inevitable by inheritance or simply formed from unknown causes. Your veterinarian can provide the best guidance for you and the care of your dog.
