Evacuation: Caring for Your Dog During a Fire or Natural Disaster

26 16:36:49

Responsible dog owners are prepared to take care of their pets under any circumstances, including fire, flood or other natural disasters.

In the event of a fire or natural disaster, you and your dog could be forced to evacuate. A few things to keep in mind:

  • A pre-determined plan, including what to do if your dog is injured or lost, will help you remain calm and think clearly.
  • Remember to communicate and cooperate with all emergency personnel.
  • If you must leave the premises, let someone know where you are going and try to remain in contact with that person.

The American Veterinary Medical Association Saving the Whole Family brochure offers a comprehensive list of what needs to be done to safeguard your pets before, during and after a disaster.
