Preparing to welcome a puppy at home is an important aspect of caring for a puppy. The ideal age for acquiring a puppy should be somewhere between eight weeks of age when the puppy would have started to eat at least four meals a day.

Puppies generally when small have awful table manners. They end up scattering the food all over the place .It is always preferable to buy a stainless bowl as compared to plastic or ceramic. The chances of plastic getting scratched and ceramic being broken is high; Moreover there are also chances of food getting lodged in the cracks the bowls causing infections to the puppy.

Location of the food and water bowl is also another factor to be considered by a pet lover. The water bowl should never be placed in such a place where the chances of people bumping into the bowl is more. Similarly the food bowl should also be conveniently placed where the puppy can eat peacefully without getting disturbed .Fresh water to drink should be made available to the pet at all times.

Puppies love playing with toys. Buying a couple of squeaky toys, fleece toys and chew toys would keep a puppy engaged throughout the day. This is because when a new pup arrives into a new owner’s house, he is likely to miss his mother and other playmates. Moreover, after a long day of playing, a puppy is likely to fall tired easily and falls asleep the moment he hits the bed. If an owner fails to provide toys to his pet, he may to do away with his personal belongings, furniture; clothes which might look like toys to a puppy and the pup might end up chewing them. A pet owner should always buy a mix of toys which can be played when the puppy is alone and also when in company .The Safety of the pet when buying toys should be the main consideration of a pet lover. Buying toys which get easily broken and could be swallowed by pets should be avoided.

Choosing a good quality bed for a puppy is another area which a pup owner has to look into .The bed should be resistant to chewing and tearing by the pup. Buying a good quality mattress and blanket provides the much needed comfort to a pet canine. The size of the bed should be such that a puppy gets a good movement space and the bed fits him even after he grows up.

Buying a good collar and leash for a puppy is a must buy for any pet owner. The sooner it is purchased the better. It is easy to train a pet to get accustomed to the collar and leash when it is small than to train it after it grows up. Failure on the part of a pet owner to train his puppy with collar and leash would lead to losing his pet in future when the pet starts moving about and runs beyond the confines of the pet owner’s house. There may be initial resistance from a pet, but slowly the puppy will get used to wearing a collar and leash.

Buying a tag for a puppy is something that a puppy owner should never forget. By filling the name, address and telephone number, a pet owner would easily find back his puppy back home if it tends to get lost as people would call or drop the puppy back home after finding the address or telephone number on the tag.

Buying a good quality cage is one way of keeping a puppy safe from getting harmed. A cage is useful not only for house training a puppy but also while travelling anywhere.

Finally a new puppy owner should never fail to take his puppy to the vet for a health checkup, vaccination and also to know the needs of a puppy, how to care for a new born puppy and everything which will help him to bring up the puppy properly.
