How To Train Your Dog To Stop Chewing Your Stuff!

Next to house breaking their dog, one of the biggest problems for dog owners is that they don't want their dog to chew up their stuff. If you had absolutely nothing in a room, a dog could find something to chew on. They will chew your new furniture, your old furniture, your shoes, your favorite designer jeans, just anything they get close to, including things you would never dream they would chew on.

Chewing is a natural thing for dogs to do. One of the biggest reasons dogs chew on stuff is to relax. There are other reasons, but the important thing to remember is that you need to break this destructive habit or it will ruin a peaceful, loving relationship with your dog.

If you have a puppy, he may be chewing on your things because he is teething and he is trying to ease the pain. Give him frozen rawhide bones to help him out. Get eight to ten rawhide bones and keep them in the freezer so you always have a cold one to rotate in and out of the freezer.

Another reason to have several different rawhide bones is they each smell a little different so your puppy will have a little bit of variety. It's a better idea for him to have different chew toys for variety rather than him looking for your shoes because he is bored with the same old bone.

Provide your dog with lots of different toys. Then take the time to play with him and the toys. If you teach him his toys are fun to play with, he will be more likely to choose the toys rather than the other items lying around that he isn't supposed to chew on.

Never give a dog an old shoe or sock to chew on as a toy. He won't know the difference between the old one you give him to play with and a new shoe you leave lying on the floor.

Another reason your dog will chew is because he is bored. He can't go to school or work each day, he can't watch television or play video games, and he can't talk to friends on the phone, so he chews to keep himself entertained. Make sure you spend lots of time with him so he can burn off all that excess energy he is bound to have.
