To identify your profitable niches you have to make sure that there is demand, which means that people are looking for the information you want to provide.

To find out, go to your favorite keyword research tool and type in the keywords of the potential niche idea you have.

If your sub-category would be Dog Care you would probable type in dog grooming, or something similar. Try a couple of similar phrases and see whats coming up.

There should be over 10,000 searches per month for your keywords. If not then take them off your list because they most likely will not be lucrative.

Also find out how much competition you have. Competition is not a bad thing. People do leverage each others resources and can make a lot of money from each other instead of competing.

Too much competition isnt going to help you either. You want to rank high in the search engines and too much competition wouldnt help you to get there.

Here is a good method to find out if there is too much competition in your niche.

In Google there should be less than 800,000 competitors for your main keyword. This would tell you that it is a good profitable niche.

In Yahoo you need less than 700,000 competitors for your main keyword. That tells you it is a good profitable niche.

In MSN there should be less than 300,000 competitors for your main keyword. That would tell you it is a good profitable niche.

You should also watch the monthly searches for your particular keywords or phrases. It shouldnt be more than 11,000.

Get rid of all your potential niches that dont fit the above figures.

Stick to the above advice and numbers and you will be well on your way to identify your profitable niches.
