Use A Patch Cable To Stay Connected

27 18:06:42
A cable connecting two networking devices is termed a patch cable. These are typically used in connecting computing devices to a hub, routers, or switch. Travelers carrying laptops use these cables in connecting to Interne connections available in hotel rooms. Normally Category 5 or 5e Ethernet cables are used in making these patch cords. Of the two varieties of Cat 5/5e cables available, the stranded type is preferred over solid type because of its pliability.

Types of Patch Cords

Patch cords, primarily meant for connecting computing devices to a network setup might also be used in connecting two computers. This particular type of cord is called a crossover cable. These cables made of twisted copper wire pairs are within two meters in length and hence easy to carry. Professionals and executives who travel extensively with their laptops always keep a patch cord or cable with them.

Patch cords are also available in shorter lengths of about 8 centimeters used in stacks or routers. Patch cables of around six meters are also available and are used for transmitting in amplified signals. As the length of a patch cable increases it becomes thicker in order to reduce interference and signal loss. Patch cords are always sheathed so as to prevent attenuation.

Single conductors and coaxial cables are two other forms of patch cords used in network connectivity. Coaxial cables are shielded and used for carrying signals. The entire core is surrounded by a wire mesh which provides electrical grounding. A connector is attached at the cable terminal for plugging in this coaxial cable.

Optical fibers are used in making patch cords also. These are versatile connectors with high performance and high applicability. The length restriction for Cat 5 or 5e patch
cords does not apply to fiber optic connectors. Length of fiber optic patches could be customized and its sheathing remains uniform. These cables are used in high availability and critical networking environments. Fiber optic patch cords have high durability and operate under a temperature range between -20C and 75 C.

Uses of Patch Cords

Patch cords or cables have many a number of uses. The most widespread use of patch cords is in a networking set up or for connecting computing devices to access Internet. Another common area of usage for patch cords is in sound equipments like headphone cables, microphones, and amplifiers. Musical instruments like electric piano, guitar, or drum set use quarter inch patch cords for amplifier connections. Disc jockeys (DJs) playing records use different types of patch cords. Cat 5 or 5e snake cables, or else six meters patch cords are used in concert halls or musical venues in PA (public addressing) system. Fiber optic patches are used in communication systems, critical data transmission, testing equipments, and LAN (local area network).

Patch cords, as of now, are available in fire retardant varieties. For all practical purposes it is better to buy this variety as a safety measure. As a patch cable can have many uses, you need to be specific while buying one.
