What Is Neurology?

27 18:09:27
Neurology is one of the branches of medicine that deals with functions, anatomy and organic disorder of brain, nerves and nervous system. Diseases like Parkinson’s disease, stroke patients, multiple sclerosis, Tourette’s syndrome, epilepsy, migraine headache, sleep disorder, brain and spinal cord tumors and other neurological medical emergencies can be treated under neurology. The physician who practices neurology is known as a neurologist.
Neurology basically focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of human nervous system disorders. Nervous system in a human being controls and coordinates bodily activities. Nervous system is divided into parts such as mentioned below:

Central nervous system: It is made up of brain and spinal cord. The central nervous system is responsible for receiving information from the body and sending out signals and instructions. The brain carries information and communicates with the body through the spinal cord and nerves. The brain helps us think, imagine, feel, remember and recall by instructing us to do or behave in a particular way in a given situation

The human spinal cord is a bundle of nerves and each nerve is a bundle of thousands of neurons. These nerves connect the brain to the rest of the body.

Peripheral nervous system: This comprises of nerves and wiring. The job of peripheral nervous system is to carry the message from the brain to the rest of the body. The neurons send out messages in the form of electrical impulse that travels from one neuron to another to keep the human body functioning.

Endocrine system: This is a hormone system. It works with both the body and brain to keep the system in the human body in order and controls the body growth, body temperature, feeling of hunger etc. Endocrine system is run by glands such as, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal glands, and parathyroid glands

Symptoms of neurological diseases are so obvious and limitless as it’s the nervous system that controls the sensation and behavior of a human being. Symptoms may include loss of coordination, poor memory, language disorder, seizure, headache and more. In the event that a person experiences any of such symptoms, he should immediately consult a doctor. The neurologist in order to diagnose may put the patient through tests like, MRI, EEG Spinal tap, CAT scan, examining the nerves of the head and neck, EMG/NCCV, tests of speech, language, memory and sensation etc.

However, sometimes neurology overlaps other field of medicine. Such as, in case of Parkinson’s dementia, post stroke depression, mood dysfunction in Alzheimer’s patients, neurologists must work in tandem with psychologists to offer the best kind of treatment to the patients.
