Feline EpilepsyIf your cat is having seizures, she could have feline epilepsy. Since there is no test for feline epilepsy, the veterinarian will have to do a thorough work up in order to eliminate other causes of cat seizures. A cat who runs a high fever or whose body has overheated because of environment like being locked in a hot car, may seize. Another cause of seizures in cats is anemia which results in the brain not receiving enough oxygen. Cats have been known to consume toxins like antifreeze, chocolate, or lead which can cause seizures. Systemic problems like liver or kidney disease, brain tumors, and infections may cause seizures. Finally, an injury to the brain or inadequate blood flow to the brain may be the culprit.

The treatment goal of epilepsy in cats is to control the seizures. There is no cure. Since feline epilepsy is a chronic illness you will have to give your cat feline epilepsy medication for life. Your will need regular medical monitoring so you might want to considercat health insurance.

Feline epilepsy can cause three different types of seizures. Petit mal seizures are characterized by your cat moving its body uncontrollably and very typical blank stare that pet owners notice. Grand mal seizures will cause your cat to fall on the floor with whole body shaking, and even might result in your cat passing urine or stool. The third type of seizures normally lasts longer than 5 minutes or and is characterized by recurring seizures that come in waves one after another. If your kitty is having the third type of seizures, you must take him to an emergency vet clinic right away to avoid long term health consequences. You should plan in advance how you are going to transport the cat to the veterinarian. A cat carrier is ideal. Never stick your hands in the mouth of a cat during a seizure. You could be seriously bitten.
