You can put a small amount of cat food on the rope or inside the bell. This to will attract them to go after the bell. Get a spray, the smell will help attract them to the bell.
Teaching the cat how to use the bell is something that you will have to do for them. This is so that they will be able to learn how the bell works. The noise from the bell will let you know your cay is ready to come in.
When you place the kitty outside you will need to watch out for them coming in and teach them to use the bell. Once your kitty rings the bell, you need to give them a reward. As you start to help the cat ring the bell you will have to open the door and allow the cat to come back in with a reward, and be sure to give the kitty the reward as soon as they get in.
Once you have the cat using the door you will begin to experience the a wonderful nights sleep without the constant waking up from the annoying clawing of the door, not having to stop what you are in the middle of doing to let your cat back in and out. The key to making this work is to stick with it, and make sure that your reward the cat each time until they get it.
