Big Bad Shops
Supermarkets are not evil, they are just big, crowded and don't always offer the healthiest of choices! As consumers we are more and more concerned with getting our diets and ourselves into shape and the challenge this presents us when shopping for food is made greater by the fact that we rarely have enough time in the week to think too closely about what we are buying. The rise of the supermarkets has partly resulted from our need to be able to shop quickly for all of our household needs. However quantity and quality are not always found in the same aisle in life, or in supermarkets. These giant institutions have also been blamed, rightly or wrongly, for the demise of small local shops, independent butchers and grocers. However as we try to find ways to provide our families with healthy, fresh food, some older services are making a comeback.
What I Cooked in the War
A generation or so ago fresh food delivery & dairy product delivery was a fairly common thing. Our grannies knew how to shop - and often loved to tell us this. They of course were heroines of the war, who could feed a family on half an egg and a potato for a whole week. Thankfully times have moved on and we have a little more choice. However, there are certainly some things that we can still learn from granny. The humble milkman has faced a terrible fate in recent years, as if the modern refrigerator wasn't bad enough news, the rise of the supermarkets seemed sure to seal his fate.

But with Terminator-esque determination he's back. He's also a she sometimes, as I said, things have moved on. Our modern-day milkmen and women also have a lot more to offer than gender diversity. In terms of fresh food delivery, their services are the 'Daddy'. Offering product ranges that included daily household essentials such as bread, tea, cheese, cleaning products and even loo roll, they can now deliver over 250 products. Fresh food delivery & dairy products have never been so easy to source. Thanks to the internet you can, of course, order online. Unlike other fresh food delivery services, you can normally order up to nine pm while next day delivery is standard - and wait for it, the good bit, there shouldn't be a delivery charge! In practice, next day delivery will normally happen while you are still fumbling around the kitchen looking for the coffee and treading on the cat. You'll both be pleased to know that coffee and cat-food are also on the list of products available.

So we may have all been a little bored by Grandma's �what I cooked in the war� stories, but it seems that the older methods of shopping that she would have recognised are still with us and we can, perhaps, save a penny or two by following her example!
