How to Repel Cats With Citrus

How to Repel Cats With Citrus. Cats are territorial creatures that like to mark things as their own. Urinating on areas or scratching at objects are two ways to mark their territory. But this behavior can damage furniture or ruin gardens. Using a cat repellent is a safe way to keep a cat away from certain areas or objects. Because cats have an acute olfactory sense, certain smells act as a deterrent or repellent. Using small amounts of citrus around the home is a natural way to train your cat to stay away from certain areas.

Using citrus is an effective cat repellent.

Things Needed

  • Orange, lemon or lime peels
  • Spray bottle
  • Lemon, orange or lime juice
  • Lemon balm or lemon grass essential oil

Step 1

Place a citrus scented air freshener near the area you want the cat to avoid. Citrus flavors include orange, lemon and lime.

Step 2

Place an unlit citrus scented candle near the area. Some candles have a very strong scent. If the candle you have has a mild odor you can rub a tiny bit of an essential oil such as lemon balm or lemon grass oil on it.

Step 3

Place a tiny drop of a citrus essential oil near the area. One drop is all that is necessary. If placing the oil on upholstery, place the oil in an unnoticeable area, in case the oil fades or stains the fabric.

Step 4

Fill a spray bottle with water. Add three to four tablespoons of lemon juice, lime juice or orange juice. Spray the mixture on or near anything that you want to keep the cat away from.

Step 5

Peel a few oranges, limes and/or lemons. Scatter the peels and rinds around the garden to keep cats away.
