It is generally believed that the Siamese cat has its origin in Siam - Thailand of modern day. It is a very old domestic breed descended from an albino cat which was a gift given to the King Siam. In Thai fables they were the ones that would protect the royal castles and temples from evil spirits. In the Siamese culture the people believed that the soul of a high ranking person who had died would stay in the cat for a while. The Siamese cat first appeared in the West in mid 1800s.

There are two versions of Siamese cat the traditional and modern Siamese. They have a long, trim body with a kinked tail and a long neck. The eyes are almond shaped and bright blue in color. The traditional cat has a round head and it is called the apple head Siamese. However, the modern Siamese cat has a head that is elongated, ears that are larger and the features are more pronounced

The original Siamese besides having a round face is also more muscular than a modern Siamese. The coat is of short hairs and the base coat which is cream colored. The face, ears, tail and legs are dark in color. The body is usually white or fawn with the Siamese markings. When a kitten is cream colored when first born. The Siamese markings develop gradually over the months. These markings are on the ears, tail, paws, muzzle and lower legs.

The Siamese cat is after attention constantly. It is a very demanding cat and requires lots of time from the owner. Its mentality is very similar to that of a dog. It is very affectionate, smart, active, and curious and people orientated. It is well-known as a vocal and talkative cat. The Siamese talks a lot and when it is on heat it can become most annoying. Then it makes loud noises like that of the wild lion.

When the Siamese cat feels neglected, it can get very jealous and throws tantrums. The Siamese does not like to be ignored. They want to be with you all the time. The traditional Siamese cat tends to have been more laid back t than the modern Siamese.

The Siamese cat is bored quickly. It is essential to have toys and an area for it to play and exercise. It needs to scratch and sharpen its claws to be healthy. A cat gym or cat tree with a scratching post would be most essential. Regular brushing is necessary in order to keep its coat in good condition.

The Siamese cat matures early in its life, as young as five months old. This is a very fertile breed; the litter size is on average six. It is essential to have your Siamese cat vaccinated before you allow it to go outside. If you wish to feed fruit or greens to your Siamese cat, then that they must be boiled first. If you are going to take your pet for a walk outdoors then you must use a harness and a leash to prevent it from taking off .

The Siamese cat still remains to be one of the most popular shorthaired cats in the world. It is a cat which is only really suitable for those people that can give it lots of love and attention. It is not a pet for such people that do not like a great deal of noise, as this breed does tend to be noisy on a constant basis. The Siamese cat can however, be your best friend and a loyal companion due to its affection. Minimal maintenance is needed for this breed due to it being shorthaired. It is important to remember however, that the traditional Siamese cat does make a better pet for the entire family, as it has a much quieter personality than that of the modern Siamese.
