Protect Your Garden Patch From Your Cats

What a splendid garden! If only your kitty would stop making it its wrestling ring. First step is to secure your fence right away. Since cats are inquisitive and sly, even little spaces in your fences could be an opportunity for them to enter into your garden. Your cat is also nimble and flexible so it can jump over fences. Therefore, it is practical to put a taut wire on the fence to prevent them from jumping over.

It may be difficult to get the cat out of the garden once it has made a decision to settle there. However, there are ways to get it out of there. One way is to make use of dogs because they are natural enemies of cats. Some breeds of dogs that are very good at doing this are Dobermans and Pit Bull.

If you do not have dogs around, squirting water towards the cat can frighten it away. In this method, all you need is a water hose or a pail with water. If one shot of water is not enough, do it again and again until it takes the hint. If you have a sprinkler at your place, you may use this instead of the bucket and garden hose. In a local hardware store, you can purchase a motion activated sprinkler that is also helpful in driving out cats. A motion activated sprinkler can sense at once movement and will sprinkle some water where it detected movement. The sprinkler will be able to target your cat, shoot water at it and drive it away. When the cat is shot with water a couple of times, it will recognize that the garden is not the place for it.

Your prized plants need defence from your cat as well. It may try to make your bed of roses its litter box. To guard your plants, try putting moth balls around the area where there are plants. Moth balls are quite successful as the scent of it drives away not only cats but other pests as well. Not only moth balls, cayenne, citronella, lavender, lemon grass and mustard can also do the trick. Another repulsive odor for cats is tobacco.

To frighten away cats off your lawn, you could try using ultrasonic devices. The high frequency sounds coming out of these devices, which cannot be perceived by people, are annoying for cats. There are several models of these devices starting from those that stay on all the time and those with motion sensors. The size of your garden matters when choosing an ultrasonic device to emply. Examine the product first and see if its range can cover your entire garden.

Commercial repellents are also used to stop cats from going into the garden. Cats dislike the odor of these commercial repellents. Other animals can also be repelled by commercial repellents. However, these should be used with caution as they contain chemicals that can be damaging to a persons health. If your garden contains vegetable crops, it is advisable to refrain from using commercial repellents.

Fences, water, sprinklers, dogs, ultrasonic devices and commercial repellents are just a few things that can aid you in preventing your cat from destroying your garden. Permitting your cats be in your garden is a no-no. Do your part and safeguard your garden.
