How to Disinfect a Bird Cage and Bird Toys

How to Disinfect a Bird Cage and Bird Toys. If you have a pet bird of any type, you already know that cleaning the cage is essential to your pet's health -- and your living environment. Take steps to disinfect not only the cage but the bird's toys and food dishes, too. A minimum once-a-week cleaning will ensure that your bird's environment is safe and comfortable.

Keep your bird's toys and cage clean.

Things Needed

  • Bleach
  • Water
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Bucket
  • Measuring cups
  • Rag

Step 01

Disinfect your bird's food and water dishes by running them through your dishwasher. Let them dry completely before refilling them.

Step 11

Move your bird to a safe place away from its cage while cleaning.

Step 21

To disinfect the cage and toys, mix a gallon of water with 1/4 cup of bleach or hydrogen peroxide.

Step 31

Remove toys and place them in a bucket with the cleaning solution. Let the toys soak for 10 minutes, then remove them. Rinse them thoroughly under running tap water. Allow the toys to dry thoroughly before returning them to the cage.

Step 41

Empty the cage of any seeds or droppings. Dip a clean rag into the cleaning solution and wipe all areas of the cage. Let the cage air dry.

Warnings

  • Caution: If you use too much bleach, you can cause serious harm to your pet bird.
