What to Look For in a Macaw Cage?

The macaw comes from the rain forest regions of South America. They are very colorful birds covered with bright yellow, red, and green feathers. You wouldn't think that these colors offer much in the way of camouflage but they blend in very well with the colorful leaves and bright fruits of the forest.

Macaws make great pets and are very loyal and intelligent companions. They are quick learners and owners can get very attached to these pets. These birds can grow to be up to 34 inches tall. If you are planning on getting one of these beautiful pets you will need a cage that is large enough to house him or her.

As is the case with many pets, the size of pet cage that you need for your macaw depends on the size of the animal and how active they are. A healthy macaw can have a lifespan of up to 50 years. Because of this you may want to invest in a high quality, sturdy cage that will last for many years. These birds also need room to move around so they can play and entertain themselves with play and toys.

When shopping for a macaw cage, look for one with spacing between the bars of one inch to one and one-half inches. Make sure these bars are solid and sturdy. The macaw has a very strong jaw and beak. Make sure any hinges are solid and that there is a good locking mechanism to prevent unannounced escapes. Galvanized steel can be toxic to these animals and don't forget about their wide wingspan.

Something else to keep in mind is what you will be putting in the cage for the bird to use. These things can take up some of the space. Wooden perches, feed and water trays, and toys can make a mid-sized cage seem quite small to a large pet macaw.
