Road trip with 2 cats

Question
Hello:

I am attempting to take a 2 day road trip with my 2 cats. I have been to the vet and have purchased two separte cat cages, some mild sedatives to help calm them (though I hate to drug them). We plan to leave early morning so I will not feed them when we leave so as to not throw up.
My fear is that we may need to leave the truck - for instance for dinner and such. I believe it's against the law to leave pets locked inside the car is it? What other tips can you offer. please?
Thank you

Answer
The law varies in different places.  Where such laws exist, it is to protect the pet from rapidly climbing temperatures in a car or truck.  And unfortunately in some places it isn't safe to leave your truck with the windows down.  You may have to give up nice meals and do take out or drive through.  Subway may be a healthier alternative.

Many large pet stores allow you to bring in your pets and have rest rooms you can use without leaving your cats behind.  You can go to Petco and Petsmart websites and locate them in places you will be passing through ahead of time.

If there are 2 of you traveling, one can go in while the other stays out with the cats.
