Taking our dog from US to Thailand.

Question
We are going to Thailand for 3 months Jan-Mar 2009. Will it be a problem to take our 1 yr old dog with us? How would he travel? He will be about 60lbs at that time, so will he have to travel in the cargo area with the luggage? Will we be able to check on him?  Any idea how much it will cost and if there are quarantine requirements, etc? Thank you so much for your help!

Answer
Dear Jeri
Best to check with Thai embassy or consulate in USA for latest info.
Also, contact usda office in the state you are in.
I am not sure if import permit is required.  Most important:
aphis 7001 international health cert issued within 10 days of travel
and endorsed by usda.  Also, rabies vac at least 30 days old and less
than 1 yr.  You would need a new health cert issued in Thailand at
time of return to USA.  No problem, reentering USA.  No quarantine
etc
He will have to travel in cargo area. No, you will NOT be able to
visit him!  Perfectly safe.
Much cheaper if you take him as excess baggage than as cargo.
Contact passenger reservation people of Thai air or United for the
costs, booking, etc.  Cargo charges would be based upon size of
kennel, and you would get this from the airline cargo office.
Let me know where in USA you live
Hope this helps to get you started.
Sincerely,  Jerry Mishler
