Taking an 11lb Pomeranian to Brazil

Question
QUESTION: What documentation will I need to provide in order to travel with my dog from the US to Brazil? She is up to date on all of her shots currently. However, I will be there from May to November, and her shots expire in July (only dhlpp and bordatella, rabies is for three years). What do I need to have when I come back into the U.S.? Will she have to be quarantined?

ANSWER:  Hi Anya,

Thank you for your inquiry!  It sounds like you have most of what you will need to come back into the US.  You want to make sure you have what is known as an "International Health Certificate," as this is what the airline will require for you to fly with your pet.  Most airlines require that the health certificate be issued within 10 days of the flight, although some require the certificate be issued within 7 days of the flight, so it's a good idea to call your airline and double check.  Other than that, as long as your dog is current on her vaccinations, you will have no problems.  There is no quarantine coming into the US.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!

QUESTION: Thanks so much Rachel. I hate to be a pest, but is there a quarantine for her going into Brazil? Also, where do I obtail the International Health Certificate? Is it soemthing that my vet already has, or do I need to get it and provide them with it?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Anya,

Thank you for your inquiry.  There is no quarantine for pets going to Brazil from the US.  You can obtain the international health certificate from any local USDA-accredited veterinarian -- if you call your vet and ask them if they have the form called the 7001 form, this will be the form you need.

Thank you!
