Traveling to Spain through France from US with a DOG

Question
How long before the trip do you have to put in the microchip? Also, is it correct that it has to be the ISO11784 for France or for the EU. We are going June 21 and I am not sure we can take the dog at this point if we have not inserted the microchip.
Can you help?

Monica

Answer
Dear Monica
Generally it is recommended to install the microchip before the
rabies shot.  The most important thing is that the microchip #
appear on ALL paperwork.  Rabies vac should be at least 30 days old
and less than 1 yr.  Some countries will allow minimum of 21 days.
The 2 and 3 yr rabies vac are often accepted with proper supporting
evidence that they are indeed 2 or 3 yr vaccines.
Best to keep within the 30 day one year protocol.
You will need the APHIS 7001 HEALTH CERT issued within 10 days of
travel and endorsed by usda.  The most important cert is the:
EU form 998 which records the microchip and rabies info.  This is
NOT a health cert though often referred to as such.  This also MUST
be endorsed by usda.  In your case I would recommend both the EU 998
in english-french and english-spanish.  Generally you would be able
to get the EU pet passport from any european veterinarian.  If you
have the time probably best to do this once there.
Since your time is so close to travel!!!!
visit:  www.ipata.com   there are several member firms both in
France and Spain.  I would recommend you contact them as to your
particular questions.  They would be better even more so than the
embassies or consulates.  The airline you are traveling on is
responsible for accepting your paperwork in a correct manner so
check with them as well.
Since I have no idea where you are, contact the usda office in your
state as well.  They should have updates.  Afterall, they MUST
endorse your paperwork as well.  Chances are your local veterinarian
will not be too up to date on these matters, unfortunately.
Please advise me how this proceeds.  Good luck
