Question
QUESTION: We have a seven-year-old Goffin's cockatoo. He was bred in captivity and is micro-chipped. We would like to bring him to France--EU--to live with us. As I understand it, although he's listed as
CITES Appendix I, exceptions are made for pet birds bred in captivity when it comes to international travel to the EU and back to the U.S. Is this true? Not true? Do you know?

ANSWER: Tom
You have lost me..... Are you now in the USA? In France?  Where is
the bird?
If you are in the USA, contact USDA in Riverdale, MD at
301.734.8364, or your local state usda office.
If you are in France, check locally with their officials.
If you are in USA, also contact French Embassy or consulate, as well.
I really do not know the answer you are looking for.  The best I
can do is help direct you.  Sorry
If you are in USA, also check with the airline you plan to fly on.
They should also have up to date info as they are responsible for
having proper paperwork for animals they accept for passage.
Good luck

QUESTION: Thanks for the information. I'm in the U.S., and we're hoping to take the bird to France for an extended stay while my wife works on mosaics. Goffin's cockatoos appear on the CITES Appendix I--which is a list of critically endangered plants and wildlife. CITES is an international treaty governing listed species. Wildlife that appears on Appendix I of the list are  often banned for importation by both the EU and also the US. However, I've read that pet birds that have been bred in captivity can be imported/travel back and forth with the proper paperwork from both the U.S. and France/the European Union. Do you know anything about this?

Thanks

Answer
Tom
Again, I can just refer you to the sources I provided before
Dealing with birds of any kind can be so complicated, I don't think
any pet shipper would have all the answers.  So much better to get this
directly from govt authorities.  I have a TF # for Fish and Wildlife
at: 800.358.2104  also at: 703.358.2104
Wish I could help more.  Keep me posted so I might be of more help
to the next person.....
