PCS to Landsthul, Germany with pet

Question
I have an 85lb lab/basset hound mix.  I rescued him 4 years ago.  Any advice you can give me about transporting him, I would appreciate.  I do know about using a military vet here in US for appropriate papers and microchip.

Where in USA will you travel from?  Taking dog with you as excess
baggage will be much cheaper and would clear customs with you at
Frankfurt.  Cargo will be much more expensive and they really rob you
at cargo office in FRA
Be sure you have good understanding of necessary papers.  Some
military vets do not really know about this.  Also, many civilian
vets do not either.
