Relocating my dog from UK to California

Question
Hi,

I am wondering if you can tell me if I need to get a rabies vaccination for my
dog since she is flying from the UK to Los Angeles. I have been told that it is
necessary by some individuals and by others that it is not required. I am
confused-and the airline is not helping.  She flies in a week so I need to
know for sure.
Many thanks

Answer
Hi Jessica,

Thank you for your inquiry. The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) requires that all pets coming into the US be vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days prior to arrival but within the last year. The exception to this rule is any pet under four months old.
However, should you choose to bring your pet into the US without being vaccinated for rabies, the CDC will ask you to sign a "Dog Confinement Letter" upon arrival in the US with your pet. This letter states that you will confine your dog until you get him vaccinated for rabies, at which point you must confine him for another 30 days to ensure the rabies has time to work its way into his bloodstream. The confinement will be done on your own property (i.e. not in an official quarantine facility). Failure to confine your dog can result in a $100,000 USD fine or 1 year in jail.
It is up to you whether you choose to have your dog vaccinated prior to arrival or if you would rather sign the confinement letter.
Cheers!
