Round trip from USA to South Africa June 9-Oct 4

Question
I am planning a trip to South Africa and would like to take my 12 pound
Bichon with me.  I know he has to be in quarantine there for a period of time
and I wonder if I can visit him during that time, and if they charge me while
he is in quarantine.  Then, when I return, I would like to know if the US will
quarantine him again, or if he is okay to go home with me.  I still have to
check with AA and Delta but I assume he will have to travel down below which
I don't like the thought of, but I hate to leave him for so long too.  I
appreciate any information you can offer.

Answer
South Africa requires use of their own health cert.  You MUST have
blood lab work done for four different diseases.  You can download
this cert from the usda website.  Or you can call me and I will
walk you thru to it, or you can call the nearest usda office and they will fax to you or your vet.
You will also need import permit.  There is NO quarantine.  Pets
MUST travel ONLY as cargo.  You will NOT be able to take him in the
cabin or as excess baggage.  He will also require the aphis 7001
international health cert issued within 10 days of travel.  ALL
paperwork will need to be indorsed by usda
He will also require microchip.  Also, rabies vac at least 30 days
old and less than one yr.
Returning to USA is very easy.  NO quarantine.  H.C. issued within
10 days of travel and valid rabies vac.
I wasn't aware American Airlines went there.  You can check with:
Delta; South African airlines; Lufthansa; KLM; British Air; Air
France.
