ground water

I HAVE JUST FINISHED DIGGING MY POND ONLY TO DISCOVER QUITE A BIT OF GROUND WATER HAS FILLED THE HOLE. I SPENT A LOT OF TIME DIGGING AND I STILL WANT TO KEEP THE POND WHERE I DUG IT. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT I CANNOT PUT A LINERED POND THERE AS THE LINER WOULD BUBBLE UP AFTER A WHILE FROM GROUND WATER UNDER THE LINER. PLEASE TELL ME THAT THERE IS SOMETHING I CAN DO TO FIX IT. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED .  THANKS   MIKE

Sorry for the delay. I had a day off fri to do away caravanning.
To answer your question - It depends what the source of the water is. It can be either the water table for the area or an underground spring or a burst water main. Observe if the level of the water continues to rise or not. If it stays constant after 24 hrs then thats the natural water table level. You can fill in the bottom and put your liner on top of it if thats practical. You could also extent the surface area a bit to conpensate. Most garden ponds dont need to be more than 2ft 6in deep bear in mind. (750mm).

If the water does continue to rise then im afraid youve either got an underground spring or more likely you went through a water main with your spade. If you can fix the main then you are ok but if it is a spring then im sorry to say you cant put the pond there as it will get washed away like you said.
Does the water smell of sewage. If so you could have a broken sewage pipe.
The other alternative is to put a pre-formed pond in.
