Winterizing

Question
Dear Robyn:

I was unsure if this question would be suited to you, but I did not know who else to ask.  I have a bird bath (non-electrical) and I used the Silicone adhesive that came with it to bond the top of the bird bath to the base.  Now I have had this for maybe 5 years or longer and it had never even come close to loosening, but I have also kept it inside.  The problem is that it has to weigh over 100 pounds and I would really like to leave it outside now that I have a nicer back yard to display it on.  Will the Silicone adhesive be able to handle the Winter season?  I live in New Jersey and it can get pretty cold in the winter.

Thank you,

Michael

Answer
I'm not sure if I'm correct but I'll give it a try.  I have silicone around my pond filter lip.  After 5 years, it has hardened, kind of rotted, and started to fall off.  So, I would say that for your bird bath, the silicone should be ok for at least a few years but then will need a touch up if it is exposed to water especially but also the freezing weather.
