I am looking to buy or build a simple shallow pond for my dogs to walk through or lay in when they get hot in the back yard.  The dogs have access to dog houses, a garage, and plenty of shade but they love water too!  Is there a way I can create a small place for them to do this?  I envisioned something like a rubber lining with about 8 inches of water.  What kind of pump (or filter?) would I need for something like this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Why not get one of those kiddie pools, the preformed one you can buy at Walmart, they are about 6 feet in diameter and about 1 foot deep. Just fill with water. If the water gets too dirty just dump it out and refill. No need for pump or filter.

Leigh,
I have used a kiddie pool in the past ..... it just isnt very durable and the water gets splased out quickly.  I am looking for something that I can put in ground.  I thought about putting a kiddie pool in a small hole but then I realized that it will be too heavy to move :-).  I thank you for your quick response on my last question.  Do you have anymore suggestions?

Answer
You could dig a hole the apprpriate size and put a pond liner in it. You would only need a small fountain pump with a small intake filter. The only problem I have with that is be sure to keep the dog's nails clipped. If they play in the water a lot they may damage the liner. One other thing you might ty is put in the pond liner and cover the liner with that black building plastic they use when builders do roofing. That may help protect the liner.
