sources for native fish

Question
Hi Leigh and thanks for your time. I discovered that there are many pretty native Florida fish, i.e. American Flag Fish, that would be great for our 500 gal pond in SW Florida (Sarasota county). But I've run into so many deadends on finding sources for them. Can't find a ponding club locally. I've got a short list of what I'd like from looking at many sites, but I need to talk to/buy from an expert as to how to mix the community. I've tried the American Killie Fish Association - they have a threaded message board and it's driven me crazy. All contacts come back with defunct addresses. I may be able to get a local store to order for me, but their expertise is limited. These fish are not cheap and I'm hoping to try to get it right the first time. We've been very lucky with the 4 month old pond so far, except for an infestation of pond snails that came in on some plants I bought on ebay. They haven't eaten everything but I want something to eat them!
Peace to you and yours and all us nature nuts, MBA

Answer
I am not too sure about what fish will survive. Bottom line is if you have fresh water {not salted water) try using something as common as feeder goldfish. You can get them at any fish store for about 40 cents each. If you can get them to breed you will have many multi colored. Go that route. It is alot cheaper and more satifying that getting some expensive fish that croaks overnight. If the goldfish survive get something more exotic. You live in a hot bed of exotic fish try a barbless hook and catch some. A homepond is a slice of nature just enjoy it . Give it a year or two before you get too exotic.
